Remember when the worst issue you had to worry about when applying lipstick was whether or not it was the right shade? Right, neither do I. It’s always been a cavalcade of colors, brands, and let’s not forget finishes. I used to think there was just two types, matte and gloss, but that was just wishful thinking, age and experience has taught me that there are a bunch of different finishes, and each of them combines with color to produce a completely different result. Thankfully, you don’t have to have an art degree to be able to make sense of this, just a simple guide and a bit of experimentation.
Satin? Sheer? Call It What You Want, It’s Light And Moisturizing
Satin is an interesting finish, but it can also be a particularly tricky one. The color on the packaging doesn’t quite transfer to the color on your lips, but you can at least be assured that the difference will be somewhat consistent. The oil dilution that gives sheer lipsticks their look makes the color a bit lighter on your lips every time. They have the benefit of being moisturizing for dry lips, but they do need to be reapplied fairly frequently due to their limited coverage.
Matte? We prefer to call it ‘Velvet’
Kylie Jenner made these famous, but you make them fabulous. Matte lipstick have a wonderful color palette that make your lips look smooth, their velvety finish minimizing lines in your lips and creating a wonderfully full look. Combine them with lip over-lining and you’re going to have incredibly kissable lips. Unlike sheer lipsticks they have longevity, once you’ve put it on you won’t have to reapply often, if at all throughout the night.
Liquids Are Lovely
Liquid lipsticks are a wonderful innovation, and bring a lot to the party. Easy to apply, typically quite glossy, and simple to carry with you wherever you go you’ll have a great look that people, you most importantly, will love. They help your lips look fuller, in part due to the additional texture their application will give to them.
Cream Matte – Sheer Meets Matte
Sheer lipsticks have a tendency to be quite glossy, which can create a wonderful look in the right circumstances, but sometimes you want a nice matte finish with the ease and moisturizing nature of sheer lipsticks. Enter the Cream Matte, essentially a form of liquid lipstick these are a bit waxy to give it that matte look, but is easier on your lips. You want pigment? Cream Matte brings pigment to the table in spades.
These four are just the tip of the iceberg, there are moisturizing lipsticks, colored lip balms (don’t kid yourselves Ladiez, these are definitely a form of lipstick), frosted, and lip stain, just to name a few.
